Roblox has implemented a mandatory facial verification process for its users to access chats on its platform, with 45% having completed age checks by January 31. This step was taken in response to lawsuits regarding child safety, aiming to protect young users from risks like grooming and explicit content. The age verification is conducted via the Roblox app, processed by a third-party vendor, Persona, which assures that all images and videos are deleted post-processing.

Users who complete the age check can access chats with peers in their age group, divided into six categories. For those whose age is incorrectly estimated, alternative verification methods are available, including ID checks and parental controls. Despite these measures, concerns remain over potential loopholes where accounts could be misused by predators. Roblox has deployed continuous systems to monitor and verify the age consistency of its users.

The company’s recent data indicates a younger user base than previously self-reported, with the majority being under 18. Roblox aims to refine its system to ensure users’ age accuracy, using various indicators such as typing patterns and emoji usage.
